Using the Beeline Online Route Planner

Learn how to navigate and make the most of our upgraded online route planner with this step-by-step guide.

Planning your next adventure is now even easier with the Beeline Online Route Planner (ORP). Designed to complement the mobile app, this desktop tool allows you to map out your perfect journey on a larger screen with maximum precision.

Why use the Online Route Planner?

  • Desktop Convenience: Plan your routes on a larger screen.

  • Seamless Syncing: Any route you create and save while logged into your account will automatically appear in your Beeline mobile app—ready to ride when you are.

How It Works & Key Features

The online planner functions very similarly to the Beeline app, but with added desktop-friendly controls to give you total flexibility.

To get the absolute most out of the Online Route Planner, we highly recommend logging into your Beeline account on both your desktop browser and your phone app.

Before starting to plan your ride, you can go through the settings to make sure everything is to your liking.

The settings button is in the top right corner, as shown above. There, you have the options to choose the following:

  • Distance unit: kilometres, miles & feet, miles & meters.

  • Appearance: Default system, light and dark mode.

  • Language: English/Deutsch/Français/Español/Italiano/Nederlands/日本語/中文(台灣)/Čeština/Português (Brasil)

  • To exit the settings page, press the ‘plan’ button!

1. Setting Your Mode

Before planning your ride, make sure you choose your mode at the top of the planner:

  • Cycling routes:

    • If you are covered by Beeline Smart Routing, you have the option to switch between Fast, Quiet, or Balanced routes.

    • If your routes are provided by MapBox, you will see Route 1 or Route 2.

  • Motorcycle routes:

    • If you are covered by Beeline Smart Routing, you can choose between fast, fun and relaxed routes.

    • If your routes are provided by MapBox, you will see Route 1 or Route 2.

2. Setting your route preferences:

Choose your ride preferences to ensure your route is tailored to you!

In the cycling activity type, you can avoid unpaved surfaces, and you can avoid steps and barriers.

Note: Please know that being able to avoid unpaved surfaces and avoid steps and barriers are only available in locations with Beeline Smart Routing. Check our Beeline Smart Routing coverage list here.

In the motorcycling activity type. you can avoid highways, avoid toll routes and/or avoid ferries.

3. Plan your route

Set your start point and destination, either by clicking on the map itself, or by entering the address on the side panel, as shown below. Adding waypoints can help you customise the route to your liking.

Once you have added your start point/destination and any waypoints, you will then be offered your route options!

4. Customising Your Path

  • Adding Stops & Waypoints: Click the [+] button in the sidebar to add a waypoint, or simply click anywhere on the map to drop a new point.

To rearrange your start point, waypoints or destination, click and hold on the waypoint number, or start point/destination marker in the sidebar and move it into the preferred position.

  • Drag and Drop: Want to force your route down a specific favourite road? Simply click and hold any part of the route line, then drag it to your preferred street to instantly create an intermediate waypoint.

  • Route Reversal: If you want to ride your journey in reverse, click the two-arrow button to flip your start and endpoints instantly.

  • Undo / Redo: Made a mistake? Quickly backtrack or restore your changes using the arrow buttons located in the top-left corner of the interface.

5. Analysing Your Journey (Elevation & Surface Info)

As you build your route, a detailed data panel will open at the bottom of the map screen to help you know exactly what to expect before you roll:

  • Elevation Profile: View a live chart of the hills, climbs, and descents on your route.

  • Surface Information: See an exact percentage breakdown of your ride split between paved and unpaved terrain.

    • On the map, unpaved sections will be shown with dashed route lines.

  • Icons along your journey: You might see some icons (!) along your planned route. To understand what these mean, check out our support article here.

6. Finalising your planned ride

Saving to your Beeline App

Once you’re happy with your planned ride, click Save on your desktop, as shown in the picture below.

The route will then be automatically available on your Beeline app! You can find it in your Saved routes section of the app!

Exporting as a GPX File

Prefer to export your route to another device? You can download your plan as a GPX file instead. Read our GPX guide to learn more here.

Fancy checking out a saved ride (from your app) on a larger screen? You can do this on our Online Route Planner! Simply press the 'saved' button across the top of the screen. Please know that you need to be logged into your account for this to work.

Note: You are not able to edit these through the ORP, but you are able to download them!

Things to Note

  • No need for an account: You don't need a Beeline account just to try out the planner and explore. However, you will need to log in if you wish to save your routes directly to your app.

  • Elevation and surface data: Elevation and surface information is only viewable on Beeline Smart Routed routes. To double-check what is covered by Beeline Smart Routing, please check out our coverage article here.
