Starting a Ride from Your Device: Background App Usage

One way to start your ride with Beeline is to do so directly from Beeline devices. In most cases, it is a simple 3-click process (read about it here!), but from time to time, your phone’s operating system may have other priorities and cut off the communication with the Beeline app to trigger the feature. If you run into that issue, the following information should help to get you back on track.

Some important context first: to make this feature seamless, the Beeline app runs within the background services of your phone so the app is always ready to connect and start the ride.

Here is how background usage works across Android and iOS, and how to configure your settings for the best experience.

Android

When Start ride from device is active, the Beeline app runs a lightweight background service to keep a Bluetooth connection open even when you are not actively riding with the app. This listens for your Beeline even when the app is closed or your device is switched off, allowing you to start a route instantly from the handlebars when you trigger that action with the start ride from device feature.

  • "Let's ride" notification: While this background service is listening, Android will display a persistent "Let's ride" notification. You may see this in your phone’s notifications list.

  • Location usage: Android may show Beeline under active location usage due to background permissions, but the app does not track your location unless you are actively riding.

  • Automatic setup: This feature is enabled automatically the first time you connect a compatible device (such as our original Moto, Moto II or Velo 2) and remains active while that device is paired.

If you prefer not to have the app running in the background when you aren't riding:

  1. Turn on your Beeline and allow it to connect to the app.

  2. Open the Beeline app and go to Settings → Devices.

  3. Under Device settings, tap Start ride from device and toggle it off.

(Note: Unpairing or removing the device from the app will also stop this background service.)

iOS

Because Apple’s operating system manages system memory, iOS may freeze or suspend the Beeline app in the background if other apps need resources—even while Bluetooth still appears connected.

The Beeline app cannot override these system-level iOS restrictions before a ride actively begins.

If your iPhone does close the Beeline app, there are some things you can keep in mind to minimise the likelihood that this prevents you from using the start ride from device feature:

  1. Turn off Low Power Mode: Go to Settings > Battery and turn off Low Power Mode.

  2. Enable Background Refresh: Go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn it on for Beeline.

  3. Set Location Access to "Always": Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Beeline and select Always.

  4. Close Heavy Apps: Force-close resource-heavy apps (such as games or video streaming) before heading out.

  5. Open the App Last: Open the Beeline app right before heading out to ensure it restarts the active app service
